Thanks to the Strategic Projects Guarantee, the first sailing container ship will be French!

Their need

Windcoop, the first cooperative shipping company for sailing container ships, founded in 2022 in Lorient, has set itself the mission of reinventing the transport of goods at sea.

Its ambition: to build the world's first cooperative sailing container ship, capable of connecting Madagascar to France without transshipment, while reducing CO₂ emissions by 60%.

To bring this project to fruition, Windcoop had to raise structural financing and convince public and private partners of its cooperative and ecological model.

Our Solution

Bpifrance Assurance Export intervened through the Strategic Project Guarantee (GPS), a scheme designed to support industrial projects deemed strategic for France. This guarantee was provided as a counter-guarantee for a bank loan structured by Crédit Maritime Grand Ouest – Banque Populaire, securing a significant portion of the overall financing of €28,5 million.

Result

Windcoop is moving from project to completion: construction of the vessel will begin in 2026, with a launch scheduled for May 2027. This 91,3-meter container ship, equipped with three rigid wings of 350 m² each, will be capable of transporting 210 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and 2,500 tons of goods, with 40 refrigerated outlets and total autonomy for loading and unloading thanks to an on-board crane.

The ship will provide a direct line between Marseille and Madagascar (Tamatave, Diego Suarez, Majunga), without transhipment, and will accommodate 12 passengers in addition to its crew.
