Bpifrance Assurance Export becomes a permanent member of the NZECA alliance and strengthens its commitment to low-carbon financing

Bpifrance Assurance Export takes a new step in its climate commitment by becoming a permanent member of the Net-Zero Export Credit Agencies Alliance (NZECA), an initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP FI).

An international alliance at the heart of decarbonizing trade

Launched at COP28, the NZECA brings together public export credit agencies and import-export banks committed to aligning their activities with the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. By supporting hundreds of billions of dollars of international trade, these institutions play a key role in directing financing towards projects compatible with climate objectives.

Structuring commitments and enhanced participation

Becoming a permanent member marks a turning point for Bpifrance Assurance Export. It entails concrete and measurable commitments, notably to a trajectory aligned with the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, the monitoring and publication of its greenhouse gas emissions, and the definition of science-based interim targets. This approach is accompanied by a heightened focus on reducing the carbon footprint of funded projects, particularly in the highest-emitting sectors.

Beyond its status as a permanent member, Bpifrance Assurance Export is also joining the NZECA steering committee. This participation allows it to contribute to the development of common methodologies, sector-specific frameworks, and the sharing of best practices among export finance stakeholders, while also taking part in the evolution of international practices.

This dynamic is part of Bpifrance Assurance Export's climate strategy.

Export credit agencies occupy a strategic position: they secure and finance large-scale industrial and infrastructure projects. In this context, the integration of Bpifrance Assurance Export as a permanent member strengthens its capacity to:

  • to develop its financing tools,
  • accelerate the decarbonization of the French export portfolio,
  • and actively contribute to the transformation of international trade.

This development is in line with actions already undertaken by Bpifrance Assurance Export, such as the publication of its carbon footprint, the progressive reduction of its exposure to fossil fuels and the development of incentives for sustainable projects.

As Denis Le Fers, Managing Director, points out:

“Becoming a permanent member and joining the steering committee of the NZECA alliance is a key step in our climate commitment. Bpifrance Assurance Export is thus affirming its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, in collaboration with agencies fully committed to this transition.”
